April 2004

To me, April is a month of re-birth. Spring is in the air! When we look out our windows we see green grass growing where there once there were brown patches. The days get longer and are filled with sun and warmth, rather than snow and cold.

This season of change and re-birth can alse be applied to our lives and recovery. At this time we can look inside ourselves and see what lies dead and figure out ways to awaken it. Are there any feelings which we've hidden deep inside and that need to be dealt with? Are there childhood issues and fears which need to be healed? Are there parts of ourselves which we've given up in order to please other people?

This can also be a time to stop and look back at how far we've come. I know that personally, my recovery work can feel daunting. Sometimes I look around and wonder if my life is really any different than it used to be. That's when I need to take some time and reflect on where I am now and where I used to be. I can look back and remember times of cold isolation, when my life seemed so bleak. I can remember how my heart and soul felt buried in snow and I never thought I would feel the sun's warmth again. But then I look at today! Today the sun is bright within me and it feels so good!

The seeds of change are sprouting inside all of us. All we have to do is nourish those seeds. If we allow the sun to shine inside us, we'll discover that we no longer feel barren on the inside but rather we'll be filled with a whole garden of blessings.
