April 2005
From The Desk of the Vice Chair
Rhonnie is currently on spring break, enjoying the warm weather, and will return next month renewed and refreshed full of insight.
APRIL FOOLS!!!!
What I should have said is…I wish I were on spring break.
When I was in school, I always looked forward to that wonderful week between Christmas and summer vacation. It brings fond memories of warm weather playtime, green grass, Mom’s flower garden, new Easter dresses, egg hunts and chocolate bunnies.
Would it not be so wonderful if the real world would allow you to have a spring break? OK, I understand the logistics of it alone could be quite a task, however, I’d volunteer to take it on.
I would get a large calendar…a very large calendar. I would have to make sure that not all hospitals and doctor’s offices were closed at the same time. Also retail business and airports would have to coordinate with each other. I can see it might be tough with utility companies and grocery stores, but I am sure, given enough time, I could come up with a workable plan.
After the week off, everyone would be renewed and ready to tackle anything until it was time for summer vacation.
I could start a new trend, and just think of the prospects…it could go nationally, then world wide, I could start a new website www.givememyspringbreak.com…
Maybe I should have stopped at…Rhonnie is currently on spring break…
Just a dreamer,
Rhonnie, Vice Chair
2005…Redefining Service Work
“Service is a key, an important one. It’s a key to joy, to love. And a gold key to the journey.
How long we thought service meant doing everything for everyone. How long we thought service has to be hard, taxing, boring – that it meant doing something we didn’t want to do to help someone who didn’t want to be helped.
Now we’re defining service differently. Service is joyful. It’s an attitude, a belief, a way of looking at ourselves and our lives. Our very life is service. Our being is service. Service arises and springs naturally our of self-love. It arises from being who we are and from doing the things we want to and are led to do. The things that bring us the most joy will bring the most service to the world. Doing things we don’t want to do will leave us and the world around us cold, untouched, unmoved.
Service is love and joy. Service is being who you are. Bask in self-love. Service will flow naturally from that. It will be freely given and freely received. And now what you do will really help.”
~Melodie Beattie, from “Journey to the Heart”
Here are some examples of ways in which you can be of service in the CoDa community:
- Pour coffee at meeting
- Become a sponsor
- Chair a meeting
- Reach out to someone after the meeting
- Greet newcomer’s
- Take a position on the service board
- Become a meeting GSR
- Clean up and help after meeting
New Bylaw Passed
New bylaw passed by the board and will go in to affect on April 24. The bi-law is as follows:
This bylaw will require each board member and GSR to attend every monthly board meeting with the proviso that only two (2) meetings can be missed in a year.
If a board member misses more than two (2) meetings, the board will vote on whether to retain that person or relieve them from their duties.
If a GSR misses more than 2 meetings, without sending a representative, two (2) board members will attend the meeting that person represents and inform the attendees that their GSR is not properly representing them to the board. We will then take a group conscience vote on how the group would like to proceed. If a GSR has a conflict with the board meeting, the group may then elect someone else from the meeting to represent them to the board.
If a group chooses not to send a representative to the board meetings, the board will discuss no longer supporting that group and will report the group to CoDA Nationals.
- Please remember to bring in your 7th tradition meeting donations to the montly service meeting. The formula is 80% to the 12-Step house and 20% to the CoDa service group. Each group should keep a prudent reserve of $10-$15 for individual meeting expenses such as chips, literature, etc.
